Theme: Do not be afraid go catch men
Introduction
Luke 5:1–11 records Jesus’ first call to specific disciples and the importance of humility for His followers. Jesus’ word to Simon Peter is also a word to us: “Do not be afraid.” This is Jesus’ mission, and we trust that he will keep working with us and through us.
Great Catch of Fish
Luke’s story is unique among the synoptic Gospels. While Mark and Matthew speak of Jesus walking along the Sea of Galilee and abruptly calling Simon, Andrew, James, and John to follow him (Matt 4:18-22; Mark 1:16-20), it’s only Luke that tells the story of a miraculous catch of fish preceding the call.
Theme: Temptation is real
Introduction
The temptation of Jesus, occurs early in His ministry. In fact, it happens more or less right away, even before He begins His public ministry. It was immediately after His baptism that the Spirit led Jesus into the wilderness. For forty days He was out there, fasting in that harsh and lonely terrain.
Background
Now if you know your Bible, Jesus here is replaying the experience of ancient Israel, when they wandered in the wilderness for forty years. Jesus is, in a sense, Israel reduced to one, the one true and representative Israelite–the one who gets it right. While Israel was wandering in the wilderness for those forty years, they were tempted to grumble and complain………
Theme: Do as He tells you
Introduction
It is sometimes the case with a biblical text that one can draw various points from it without exhausting all the points that are there to be had. I think that is the case with our text for today, Jesus turning water into wine at the wedding in Cana.
“The Wedding at Cana.”
So Jesus is there at the wedding. It’s at Cana in Galilee, not that far from Nazareth, where Jesus grew up, or from Capernaum, where now he was making his headquarters. How he got invited to the wedding is not directly stated, but it may have been because his mother was a friend of the family. So Mary is there, Jesus is there, and Jesus brings along his disciples…..
