Fifteen Deaconess Candidates Graduate from Lutheran Theological Seminary Ghana

The Evangelical Lutheran Church of Ghana (ELCG) joyfully celebrated the graduation of fifteen Deaconess candidates on 10th May 2025 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Kanda. The event marks a significant achievement in the Church’s commitment to equipping women for ministry.

In his welcome address, Rev. John Shadrack Donkoh, President and Bishop of ELCG, traced the journey of the Deaconess programme from its bold beginning in 2018 through the foundational training in 2019 led by Dr. Cynthia Lumley. The programme, rooted in Scripture and Lutheran tradition, trains women to serve in congregations, missions, and social outreach.

“This graduation is a testimony of faith, sacrifice, and perseverance,” Bishop Donkoh stated. “These women have been prepared not just academically, but spiritually, to be Christ’s hands and feet in our communities.”

With a theme verse from 1 Thessalonians 1:2-3, the ceremony emphasized the core of a Deaconess’s calling: working in faith, laboring in love, and remaining steadfast in hope. The programme was made possible with support from partners including the LCMS and Westfield House of Theological Studies in the UK.

The graduates were commended for their dedication and encouraged to carry the heart of service into every assignment the Lord places before them.
