Introduction
Last Sunday we read in our churches the gospel according to St. Mark 12.
Text
The widow, according to the text, gave all she had, even though it was a big sacrifice. Her giving teaches us three important lessons:
Sacrificial Giving:
The widow gave a meaningful portion of what she had, even though it wasn’t much in the eyes of the world. We’re encouraged to look at our own giving: is it significant to us, or is it just a small part of what we have?
Giving to God:
The widow gave her offering to the temple, not just for its upkeep but as a gift to God. Today, when we give, we’re not just supporting our church’s budget; we’re offering ourselves to God out of gratitude for all He has done for us. This supports the church’s mission to share God’s love locally and around the country.
Trust in God:
The widow trusted that God would take care of her even as she gave so much. Jesus praised her faith because she depended on God fully.
Gospel/Example
Jesus Himself showed the greatest example of sacrificial giving by giving His life for us on the cross. Because of His sacrifice, we’re assured of God’s love and forgiveness. Trusting in this, we can freely give, knowing God will take care of us.
Conclusion
Ultimately, giving isn’t about the amount; it’s about giving from the heart, trusting in God’s provision, and being inspired by how much He has already given to us for our righteousness and salvation.
Amen!
