False Prophets in the light of happenings in Ghana

Introduction

In recent weeks, Ghana has experienced series of tragic events, including the heartbreaking loss of prominent national leaders and ministers in a helicopter crash. As a nation, we grieve together and lift up the bereaved families in prayer, seeking comfort and strength from the Lord.

False Prophets

Amid this time of mourning, certain self-proclaimed “prophets” have emerged, claiming to have foreseen these events and using the tragedy to spread fear and panic through alarming so-called revelations. These actions do not reflect the spirit of Christ, nor do they build up the Body of Christ (The Church), and for that matter people of Ghana!

As the President and Bishop of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Ghana (ELCG), I feel compelled to warn our members and the wider community about the spiritual danger of following such false prophets.

Scripture

Scripture consistently calls us to discernment and to test every spirit (1 John 4:1). God’s people must not be led by fear or superstition, but by the sure and unchanging truth of His Word.

Evil

We are reminded in Ephesians 6:12 that “we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places.”

Encouragement

In times like these, we are urged to “take up the whole armor of God, that [we] may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm.”

Let us therefore stand firm in the Word of God, the only true source of comfort, wisdom, and guidance. May we reject the fearmongering of false prophets and cling instead to the hope we have in Christ Jesus. God’s truth alone can expose and defeat the lies of the enemy.

Beware of False Prophets:

Understanding Their Origin, Characteristics, and Danger

Background

False prophets have been a persistent danger throughout biblical history—and Scripture warns they will become even more prevalent in the end times. These individuals claim to speak for God but promote deception, lead people astray, and undermine the truth of the Gospel. Their influence is subtle, persuasive, and deeply harmful.

The Origin of False Prophets

The Bible reveals that false prophets ultimately come from three sources:

  1. Satan – The father of lies, Satan uses false prophets to deceive and destroy (Matthew 13:38–39; 1 John 4:1–6).
  2. The World – The corrupt values of the world—driven by pride, rebellion, and desire—give rise to false teachers who appeal to human appetites (1 John 4:5; 2 Timothy 4:3–4).
  3. The Human Heart – Deceit comes not only from outside but also from within. Our sinful nature can produce false messages born of selfish ambition, imagination, or misguided zeal (Mark 7:20–23; Jeremiah 17:9).

Characteristics of False Prophets

False prophets in the last days are described in detail throughout Scripture.

Common traits:

Deceptive Appearance – They appear as sheep but are inwardly ravenous wolves (Matthew 7:15).

Supernatural Deception – They perform signs and wonders to mislead, even the elect (Matthew 24:24; Mark 13:22).

Doctrinal Error – They promote false teachings, deny the cross, and distort the Gospel (1 Timothy 4:1–2; 2 Peter 2:1).

Self-Proclaimed Authority – They claim to speak for God but lack His calling and truth (Revelation 16:13–14; 2 Thessalonians 2:3–4).

Materialism and Prosperity Focus – They promise wealth, ease, and success instead of truth and holiness (2 Timothy 4:3–4; 1 Timothy 6:5).

Denial of Christ’s Work – They reject or downplay the necessity of repentance, the cross, and the blood of Jesus (1 Corinthians 1:18; 2 Timothy 2:17–18).

False Peace and Security – They offer soothing words instead of warning of judgment (Jeremiah 23:16; Ezekiel 13:10).

Anti-Christ Spirit – They oppose the true Jesus, either by denying Him outright or twisting His teachings (1 John 2:18; 2 Peter 2:1).

The Harm Caused by False Prophets

The spiritual damage done by false prophets is severe and far-reaching:

*Emotional manipulation* – Followers are often abused emotionally, suffering confusion, guilt, and anxiety.

*Financial exploitation* – Many demand offerings or sowing of “seed money,” leaving followers financially broken.

*Social isolation* – Followers are sometimes cut off from loved ones who question the prophet’s authority.

*Spiritual destruction* – Most importantly, false prophets lead people away from true salvation in Christ.

*Malady (Biblical Examples of False Prophets)*

Balaam (Numbers 22; 2 Peter 2:15–16): A prophet motivated by greed.

Jezebel (1 Kings 16:31; Revelation 2:20): A manipulative queen who promoted false religion and attacked God’s servants.

The False Prophet (Revelation 16:13–14; 19:20): A future deceiver who will perform miraculous signs to support the Antichrist and mislead the world.

*Scriptural Warnings*

The Bible gives repeated and urgent warnings:

“Do not listen to what the prophets are prophesying to you; they fill you with false hopes.” —Jeremiah 23:16

“Many false prophets will appear and deceive many people.” —Matthew 24:11

“Such people are false apostles, deceitful workers, masquerading as apostles of Christ.” —2 Corinthians 11:13–15

“When someone tells you to consult mediums and spiritists… should not a people inquire of their God?” —Isaiah 8:19–20

How to Guard Yourself Against False Prophets

Test every spirit – Don’t accept every message as truth. Compare it to Scripture (1 John 4:1).

Hold to sound doctrine – Know the Word of God and cling to it (2 Timothy 1:13; Titus 1:9).

Practice discernment – Don’t be carried about by every new trend or teaching (Ephesians 4:14; Hebrews 5:14).

Stay humble and prayerful – Trust in God’s Spirit to lead you into truth ( John 16:13).

Reflection

False prophets are not just a problem of the past—they are a danger today and will be even more active in the last days. Their origin is spiritual, their methods are deceptive, and their impact is destructive.

Gospel

But God has equipped His people (Church) with the truth, with discernment, and with the Holy Spirit to recognize falsehood and remain faithful to Christ.

Conclusion

Beloved please stay grounded in God’s Word, and you will not be easily deceived. In Christ Jesus is our only hope.

Amen!
