Introduction
This Christmas message reflects on the deeper significance of Advent, focusing on both the historical and future aspects of Jesus’ coming. While Christmas celebrates Jesus’ birth over 2,000 years ago, Advent points to the anticipation of His second coming. The message contrasts the modern, sentimental Christmas with its original meaning: a promise of deliverance from darkness and hope amid suffering.
Text and Background
The message highlights Isaiah 8-9, where the people of Isaiah’s time lived in spiritual and moral darkness, seeking solutions from false sources like politicians, mystics, intellects, philosophy instead of turning to God. This darkness mirrors today’s societal issues such as LGBTQ+; galamsay, sex trafficking, and unrest.
True Message
The true message of Christmas, rooted in Advent, is not just joy over Jesus’ birth but recognition of Him as the light in a dark world, offering hope. Advent calls us to remember Christ’s first coming and eagerly await His return to restore the world.
Malady ( The Problem )
The darkness Isaiah described includes fear, instability, and misplaced trust that mirrors the fears we face today in personal, cooperate, church, societal, and global crises. People today often seek security in the wrong places, just as the Israelites did. Advent reminds us that we cannot save ourselves, and the hope of salvation lies only in Christ.
Mistakes
Two mistakes from Isaiah’s time are relevant today:
Misplaced Fear: People feared external threats more than God’s sovereignty, losing sight of His power. We are warned not to be consumed by fear but to focus on God’s authority.
Misplaced Faith: People turned to false sources of wisdom, such as mediums and spiritists. Similarly, today’s culture often embraces pseudo-spiritual practices instead of trusting God’s Word, which is the true path to hope.
Reflection
Isaiah’s message warns against placing faith in false saviors and worldly solutions, urging trust in God alone. Isaiah’s prophecy points to the light of salvation coming from an unexpected place through the birth of Jesus, a light that offers indestructible joy and peace, conquering oppression and ending struggles.
Gospel
Jesus, born as a humble child, is both Mighty God and Prince of Peace, bringing God’s salvation plan to fruition. The message acknowledges the “already, not yet” nature of God’s Kingdom. Christ’s first coming brought light, but we await His second coming, when all things will be made right. In the meantime, we trust God’s timing through all seasons of life.
Conclusion
As we wait, we are not alone—Jesus, through the Holy Spirit, is with us. The message encourages us to place our trust in Him, reject worldly fears and false hopes, and let His light guide us through the darkness. We are called to repent, believe, and embrace His peace, as the Kingdom of Heaven is near. Jesus is the only Saviour for you and all.
Amen!
